A group of concerned youths from Kwara South has publicly defended the region’s traditional rulers amidst criticism regarding their stance on the zoning of the 2027 Kwara South Senatorial seat.
In a statement released to journalists on Saturday, the youths characterized recent criticisms of the monarchs as "unfair, misguided, and disrespectful" to the esteemed role traditional rulers play in fostering peace, unity, and development.
The group asserted that monarchs have both a constitutional and moral obligation to speak on matters affecting their people. They emphasized that traditional rulers are more than mere ceremonial figures; they are custodians of culture, history, and the collective aspirations of their communities.
"The monarchs’ advocacy for zoning should not be misinterpreted as partisan politics. It is a call for fairness, equity, and inclusive representation among the constituent communities of Kwara South," the statement elaborated.
The youths highlighted that traditional institutions have historically played pivotal advisory roles in governance, conflict resolution, and community development, often serving as intermediaries between citizens and elected officials.
They emphasized that royal fathers cannot be expected to remain silent on issues directly impacting the welfare and future of their subjects. "Speaking on political representation is consistent with their responsibility to promote justice, balance, and stability within the region," the group stated.
Addressing concerns regarding insecurity, the youths refuted allegations that monarchs had ignored security issues within their domains. They underscored ongoing collaboration between traditional rulers, security agencies, community leaders, and government authorities in addressing crime, gathering intelligence, and fostering peaceful coexistence.
The group urged stakeholders to engage in dialogue rather than criticize esteemed royal fathers, asserting that the traditional institution remains an essential pillar of unity and development in Kwara South.
They concluded that the monarchs’ pursuit of fairness, equity, and progress should be perceived as responsible leadership and advocacy in the interest of the people, rather than as political interference.
