The Kwara State Police Command has announced plans to commence a statewide enforcement exercise against vehicles operating with covered, obscured, altered, defaced, unauthorised or missing registration number plates.
The exercise, which is in compliance with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is aimed at strengthening public safety and preventing criminal elements from using unidentifiable vehicles to evade detection.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the enforcement operation will begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, across all parts of the state.
The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Ojo Adekimi, has directed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and the State Traffic Officer to immediately commence full-scale enforcement within their respective jurisdictions.
The police warned that any vehicle found violating the directive would be impounded and subjected to thorough investigation in line with existing laws and procedures.
"The Command wishes to state unequivocally that there will be no preferential treatment, exemption, or special consideration for any individual or organisation found contravening this directive, irrespective of status, position, or influence," the statement said.
The Command advised motorists and vehicle owners to ensure that only valid, duly issued and clearly visible registration number plates are displayed on their vehicles. Vehicle owners were also urged to keep their documents up-to-date and available for inspection by law enforcement officers when required.
The police explained that the operation is a proactive security measure designed to improve vehicle identification, aid criminal investigations, track fleeing suspects and enhance the state's overall security architecture.
According to the Command, criminals have increasingly exploited concealed or unregistered vehicles to perpetrate unlawful activities, making stricter enforcement necessary.
The police further warned that anyone who deliberately covers, tampers with, alters or operates a vehicle without proper registration plates would face the full weight of the law.
While assuring residents that the exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens, the Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
Residents were also encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, vehicles or activities through the Command's emergency lines: 0703 206 9501 and 0812 527 5046.
