The Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 21-year-old suspect, Soliu Olarewaju Mujeeb, in connection with the alleged kidnapping and murder of a 60-year-old electrical technician, Mr Olarewaju Olusegun Afolabi, in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The State Commandant, Commandant Abbas Nda Mohammed, disclosed this on Sunday, 14 June 2026, while briefing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Ilorin on the outcome of an intensive investigation into the victim's disappearance.
According to the Commandant, the victim left his residence on 7 June 2026 to inspect an electrical installation project but failed to return home, raising concerns among family members.
The case was subsequently reported to the NSCDC Tracking Unit on 11 June 2026 after several attempts to reach him proved unsuccessful.
Shortly after the victim's disappearance, members of his family reportedly began receiving ransom demands of ₦2 million from his mobile phone. The family later raised and paid ₦120,000 as directed by the caller.
Following a sustained intelligence-led operation, which involved digital tracking and analysis of financial transactions linked to the victim's account, NSCDC operatives successfully traced and arrested the suspect.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crime and admitted knowing the deceased, having previously worked with him as an assistant in electrical installation services. He further revealed that a disagreement between them had led to a personal grievance.
Investigators said the suspect lured the victim to an uncompleted building in the Kangile, Kunlende area of Ilorin under the pretext of inspecting a new electrical project.
The suspect allegedly attacked and killed the victim at the location before taking possession of his mobile phone and SIM card, which were later used to contact the victim's family and demand ransom.
As part of the investigation, the suspect led operatives to the scene of the crime, where a shallow grave believed to contain the victim's remains was discovered. The victim's mobile phone and SIM card were also recovered from the suspect.
The Command said investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be transferred to the appropriate security agency for further action upon the conclusion of preliminary inquiries.
Commandant Abbas assured residents of Kwara State of the NSCDC's commitment to protecting lives and property, adding that the Corps would continue to work closely with other security agencies to rid the state of criminal elements.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
