The Kwara State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.
The declaration follows the sighting of the new moon, which makes Tuesday the first day of Muharram, the opening month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
In a statement issued and signed by the Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, on Monday, the government called on Muslims to reflect on the significance of the Hijrah and its enduring lessons for humanity.
According to the statement, the Hijrah, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah, symbolizes tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and respect for the rights and aspirations of all people.
“Hijrah reminds the world of the evergreen values of tolerance, common humanity, and the right of every person to pursue legitimate aspirations in matters of faith and worldly affairs, provided they do not harm others,” the statement said.
The government urged residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and progress in the state and the country.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq congratulated the Muslim community on the commencement of the new Islamic year and prayed for divine blessings upon families and communities.
“As we commemorate the new Hijrah Year, His Excellency Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, CON, prays that God bless every home, restore peace to our land, and give us the strength to do right by every person,” the statement added.
