The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media claiming that suspected Boko Haram members were arrested in Ilorin, the state capital.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the Command clarified that no Boko Haram suspect was arrested anywhere in the state, describing the report as unfounded and capable of creating unnecessary panic among residents.
According to the statement, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), during a routine intelligence-led surveillance operation on Tuesday, intercepted a truck conveying a large number of Fulani travellers within the Ilorin metropolis at about 8:00 p.m.
The police explained that in line with standard security procedures, the vehicle and all occupants were thoroughly screened, profiled, and searched.
“Following comprehensive checks, no incriminating item, weapon, or security threat was discovered on any of the occupants,” the statement said.
The travellers reportedly informed the police that they were on transit to Jigawa State, while their identification details and other relevant information were documented for security purposes.
The Command added that after the screening exercise, the travellers were peacefully escorted out of the metropolis and allowed to continue their journey.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Adekimi Ojo, reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to maintaining security across Kwara State through strengthened intelligence gathering, surveillance, patrols, and strategic deployments.
He urged members of the public to disregard the false report and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of undermining public peace and security.
