The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed allegations of assault during a protest at the Government House, Ilorin, describing a viral video circulating on social media as digitally manipulated and misleading.
In a press release issued on Monday through its spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, the Command said the video, which allegedly showed protesters being assaulted at the Government House gate on December 27, 2025, was subjected to forensic analysis that confirmed it was a composite of unrelated footage.
According to the police, the video was deliberately spliced to merge scenes of violent altercations from unrelated incidents with footage from a separate, peaceful protest, creating a false narrative that the violence occurred at the Government House.
The Command further revealed that some images being shared in connection with the alleged incident were traced to unrelated events that occurred several months earlier, a discrepancy that forms part of the ongoing investigation.
“All efforts by our investigative team to locate and interview the purported victims, particularly the two women featured in the video clip, have proved unsuccessful,” the statement said.
It added that no official complaint has been received from any individual or group regarding the alleged incident, despite public appeals for victims to come forward.
Reiterating the position of the Nigeria Police Force on public demonstrations, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, emphasized the importance of prior notification and coordination with law enforcement agencies.
He noted that such procedures enable the police to provide adequate security, prevent criminal elements from hijacking protests, and ensure public safety while safeguarding citizens’ constitutional rights.
The Kwara State Police Command assured residents of its continued commitment to maintaining public order and protecting fundamental human rights, while urging the public to verify information before sharing to avoid the spread of misinformation.
