Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has earned commendation for his proactive decision to relocate the Kwara State College of Nursing Sciences, Oke-Ode (KWCONOO), to Ilorin in a bid to ensure the safety of students and staff and prevent disruption of academic activities.
A today's statement by the College's spokesperson, AbdulHafeez Oyewole, stated that the commendation came from the Chairman, Kwara State House of Assembly Committee on Education and Human Capital Development, Hon. Mohammed Babasaliu, during a solidarity visit to the College’s temporary site at the Institute of Technology (I.O.T.), Mini Campus of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, on Monday.
Hon. Babasaliu said the committee’s visit was to assess how the students and staff have adapted to their new environment following the recent unfortunate incident in Oke-Ode, Ifelodun Local Government Area.
He praised Governor AbdulRazaq’s “swift and proactive measures” that ensured academic continuity at the College, describing the relocation as a timely intervention that prioritized lives and learning.
“We sincerely appreciate the management of Kwara Polytechnic for their generosity and support in hosting the management, staff, and students of the College of Nursing Sciences, Oke-Ode,” Babasaliu said.
“We also commend the AbdulRazaq-led administration for its prompt action in safeguarding lives and ensuring that academic activities continue seamlessly.”
The lawmaker also commended the College’s Provost, management, lecturers, and non-teaching staff for their resilience and dedication despite the relocation challenges.
He urged the College authorities to maintain a fair balance in handling students, saying:
“Don’t overpamper them, but don’t be harsh either. Maintain a fair balance (in your approach).”
Addressing the students, Babasaliu encouraged them to see the relocation as a phase in their educational journey rather than a setback.
“You are the future of Kwara State. This challenge should strengthen your resolve to become professional nurses. The government, your College management, and the legislature are all behind you,” he said.
He advised the students to remain focused, disciplined, and dedicated to their studies, reminding them that nursing is a noble profession centered on saving lives.
“This may be a difficult period, but remember that you are here not just to earn certificates but to learn how to save lives. Be good ambassadors of your institution, Ilorin, and Kwara State.”
While apologising for the inconveniences caused by the relocation, Babasaliu urged the students to always value their teachers.
“Never forget your teachers who hold the chalk. You owe them a debt of gratitude that lasts a lifetime.”
In her vote of thanks, Mrs. Nimata AbdulRaheem, the College’s Chief Librarian, who was directed by the Provost, Alhaji AbdulQaudri Olanrewaju to speak on behalf of the management, expressed appreciation to Hon. Babasaliu, the Committee Secretary, and other members of the delegation for their visit and encouragement.
The visiting team also included Alhaja Iyabo Yusuf, Provost of the Kwara State College of Nursing Sciences, Ilorin; while the College management team, led by Provost Alhaji AbdulQaudri Olanrewaju, received the delegation alongside Acting Registrar Mr. Hanafi Ibrahim, Bursar Alhaji Mohammed Zakari, lecturers, and non-teaching staff.
