Nigeria has been thrown into mourning as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Saturday evening, announced the death of his immediate predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari passed away in London at about 4:30 pm, after a prolonged illness.
In a statement from the State House, signed by his senior media aide, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss and has spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the widow of the late President, offering heartfelt condolences on behalf of the nation.
As part of immediate arrangements, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late leader’s body back to Nigeria for final rites.
The presidency also announced that national flags will be flown at half-mast across the country as a mark of respect for the departed statesman.
Muhammadu Buhari was twice elected President of Nigeria, first in 2015 and again in 2019. He had earlier served as Nigeria’s military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.
Described as a symbol of discipline and resilience, Buhari's passing marks the end of an era in Nigeria’s political history.
