The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has officially commenced its 50th-anniversary celebrations with the unveiling of the institution’s golden jubilee logo.
The event, held at the university’s permanent site in Ilorin, underscored the institution's commitment to academic excellence, community development, and global competitiveness.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), emphasized the university’s dedication to strengthening community engagement through initiatives such as the Community Development Experience (COBES), which connects students and faculties with towns and villages across Kwara State.
“We are deeply committed to giving back to society while fostering meaningful partnerships that create lasting impacts,” he said.
Professor Egbewole also highlighted the institution’s progress over the past year and its forward-looking 2024–2028 strategic plan, which prioritizes advancing research, improving infrastructure, and fostering community outreach.
“Our strategic plan is a work in progress, and it will place the university on the right pedestal,” he noted.
Projects such as an innovation hub have already been established to support student initiatives and entrepreneurial development.
The Vice-Chancellor disclosed that 10,789 students had benefited from the Federal Government’s student loan programme, with expectations for the number to rise in the upcoming academic session.
He also commended efforts to address challenges and ensure UNILORIN produces graduates who are job creators rather than job seekers.
Calling on alumni to support the university’s development goals, Professor Egbewole lauded the contributions of past and present stakeholders in building the institution’s legacy.
As UNILORIN marks its golden jubilee, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the university’s resolve to push boundaries in research, innovation, and community impact, positioning it as a leading global institution.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Ceremonial Committee, Professor Olugbenga Mokuolu, described the anniversary logo as a symbol of the university’s aspirations and vision.
According to him, each of the five stars on the logo represents a decade long feats of the university, while the sun represents its bright future's projection.
He explained that the year-long celebration would include a week of activities aimed at reflecting on the institution’s achievements and fostering a sense of belonging among alumni and current students.
The Committee Chairman added that about 50 billion naira projects would be inaugurated during the period of the celebrations to bring to fore some of the achievements of the university.
