Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has granted clemency to 40 convicts as part of his 60th birthday commemoration, showcasing a commitment to rehabilitation and the power of second chances.
The gesture, announced on Sunday in a statement by the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, followed recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
It highlights the Governor’s dedication to a justice system that emphasizes reform over punishment.
Of the 40 beneficiaries, 15 convicts will be released outright, effective January 12, 2025. Additionally, some death sentences will be commuted to life imprisonment, while others will have their incarceration terms reduced, offering hope for reintegration into society.
The announcement was made by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, who chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
He noted that the Council's decisions were informed by insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and community leaders, considering factors such as the nature of offenses, time served, age, health, and inmates’ conduct.
Governor Aiyedatiwa also chose to forgo personal celebrations in honor of the late Secretary to the State Government, Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tuykana), who passed away last weekend.
