Al-Hikmah University, Nigeria’s first Islamic faith-based university, marked a significant milestone on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, as it celebrated its 14th Convocation Ceremony and 20th Anniversary.
The event, held at the Moot Court on the university's Atere Campus in Ilorin, brought together dignitaries, staff, alumni, and students in a jubilant atmosphere that reflected two decades of academic excellence and impact.
Speaking at the ceremony, Alhaja Sekinat Olusola Yusuf, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, described the day as a moment of reflection and gratitude.
“Today, we celebrate not only our transformation and strings of successes but also thousands of graduates who have passed through our doors, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values to make a positive impact in the world,” she said.
Alhaja Yusuf also paid tribute to the institution’s Founder, Alhaji Chief (Dr.) Abdul Raheem Oladimeji, OFR, whose vision and determination led to the establishment of Al-Hikmah University in 2005.
From its modest beginnings with 70 students and three faculties, Al-Hikmah University has grown remarkably over the years. It now boasts a vibrant student population of 13,500, state-of-the-art facilities, and alumni excelling in various sectors globally.
Alhaja Yusuf highlighted these achievements as evidence of the university’s commitment to its mission of providing quality, faith-based education.
She urged all stakeholders to continue supporting the institution’s development.
In his valedictory address, Professor Noah Yusuf, Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, reflected on his tenure, which will conclude in July 2025.
He expressed pride in the significant progress made under his leadership, stating, “Since July 2020, we have seen tremendous growth. From adopting blended learning modes to securing full accreditation for 53 of our 55 programs, we’ve worked tirelessly to enhance academic quality.”
He also celebrated the achievements of the university’s alumni, noting that two Law graduates earned First Class at the Nigerian Law School and students excelled in international competitions such as the Youth Model African Union and the International Musabaqah in Morocco.
The ceremony also honored 2,211 graduating students, the highest number in the university’s history, including 47 First-Class graduates, 736 Second-Class Upper graduates, and 42 Ph.D. recipients.
Addressing the graduates, Alhaja Yusuf encouraged them to strive for excellence, remain curious, and pursue their dreams courageously. She reminded them of their responsibility to uphold the Islamic values instilled in them during their time at Al-Hikmah.
Professor Yusuf reinforced this message, sharing a 20-point address emphasizing lifelong learning, entrepreneurship, integrity, and community service.
He urged the graduates to remain proud of their alma mater and carry its legacy with dignity, saying, “Be proud of your certificate and your alma mater. Remember, as graduates of Al-Hikmah University, you are ambassadors of this legacy.”
In his keynote lecture titled “Two Decades of Academic Excellence of Al-Hikmah University: Reflections on the Role of Faith-Based Universities in Combating Moral and Spiritual Decadence in Nigeria,” His Excellency, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State, emphasized the critical role of institutions like Al-Hikmah University.
He pointed out their importance in nurturing not only academic excellence but also moral and spiritual growth, which are vital in addressing societal challenges.
Professor Yusuf further highlighted the university’s accolades, including the 2024 KWACCIMA Award for Best Private University in Kwara State.
However, he acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly in funding and infrastructure development. He made an appeal for support, stating, “We call on well-spirited individuals, corporate bodies, and the government to assist in research, scholarships, and infrastructural upgrades.”
His remarks underscored the need for collective effort in sustaining and enhancing the university’s standards.
Highlights of the Ceremony included conferring honorary degree in Business Administration on Chairman of Lubcon Oil, Alhaji Jani Ibrahim as well as showcasing the master plan of the University structures in Atere Campus.
The 14th Convocation Ceremony and 20th Anniversary of Al-Hikmah University were not just celebratory events but also a testament to the enduring power of vision, resilience, and collaboration.
For the graduates, it marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with opportunities to make meaningful contributions to society, guided by the values of their alma mater.
