The Honourable Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni, has met with key stakeholders, including opinion leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, and Local Government Chairmen in Plateau State to discuss ongoing security concerns in the region.
During the engagement, the Minister commended the efforts of security personnel in addressing insecurity and restoring peace, particularly in the areas of Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Bokkos, Wase, and Bassa.
While acknowledging the existing peace, the Minister urged all parties to maintain it, with a specific focus on peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders. He called on both sides to avoid violence, identifying factors like leadership negligence, criminal exploitation, and ethno-religious tensions as contributors to the crisis.
"The Federal Government is committed to deploying all assets to ensure our people sleep with their eyes closed," said Minister Badaru, stressing the importance of community engagement, credible intelligence, and collective action to tackle security challenges.
The Minister also welcomed suggestions from stakeholders and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing measures for lasting peace in the region.
Earlier, the Minister addressed senior officers and troops combating insecurity in Plateau State, expressing gratitude on behalf of the President for their efforts in restoring normalcy.
He highlighted key achievements, including the recovery of weapons, ammunition, and the dismantling of local arms production sites.
He urged the officers to intensify their efforts until insecurity is fully eradicated.
"Are you ready to end insecurity in Plateau? Your dedication is crucial. I will inform the President of your commitment," he said.
Representing Plateau State’s Executive Governor, H.E. Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, Brig. Gen. Gakji Shipi, Special Adviser on Security and Homeland Safety, expressed optimism about the outcomes of the stakeholders' engagement.
He praised the progress made in the fight against insecurity and reiterated the state's commitment to supporting the Nigerian Military in its efforts to ensure peace in Plateau.
