The Oyo State Government on Saturday announced that it had sealed some houses and shops over unhygienic practices.
The premises were sealed within the Academy
market in Ibadan, the state capital, the state government said.
Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Abiodun Oni, made
these disclosures on Saturday.
Oni, in a statement on Saturday, said
residents and owners of the sealed premises failed to comply with the laid down
hygienic practices, which necessitated
the sealing of the premises.
Oni, who spoke through the Special Adviser on Environment, Engineer
Ademola Aderinto, said that the buildings were sealed off during the ongoing
sensitisation and enforcement campaign on Saturday.
He said the exercise was done to ensure total compliance with environmental hygiene
and prevent possible outbreaks of diseases.
He added that affected buildings were responsible for heaps of waste dumped in
the market.
“Marketplaces are by nature unkempt with
practices that are harmful to the ecosystem,” he said.
