The Kwara State Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has announced plans to celebrate the 2026 edition of World Poetry Day, observed annually on March 21 under the auspices of UNESCO.
The 2026 celebration, themed “Poetry as a Bridge for Peace and Inclusion,” will feature a Spoken Word and Performance Poetry Competition for secondary school students across Kwara State. The initiative aims to discover, nurture, and showcase emerging poetic talents while promoting literacy, creativity, and cultural expression among young people.
According to the Planning Committee, the competition is designed to provide a vibrant platform for students to articulate their perspectives, address contemporary social issues, and demonstrate the richness of language and imagination through performance poetry.
World Poetry Day highlights the enduring power of poetry to inspire, heal, challenge societal norms, and unite communities. Through this state-wide engagement, ANA Kwara seeks to reinforce poetry not merely as written text, but as a dynamic art form capable of shaping minds and fostering inclusion.
Participation is open to all public and private secondary schools within the state. Detailed information regarding registration procedures, competition guidelines, venue, and prizes will be communicated directly to schools and made available through ANA Kwara’s official communication channels.
The association is calling on school administrators, literature teachers, parents, and guardians to encourage students and wards to participate in what promises to be an enriching and intellectually stimulating literary event.
