The Kwara State Fire Service on Tuesday recovered the body of a 52-year-old man, identified as Alaba Ayeni, from a domestic well off Asa-Dam Road in Ilorin, Factual Naija News reports.
The incident occurred beside Lamp Bearers Islamic School, where children in the community reportedly discovered the man inside the well and alerted elders in the area.
According to a statement by the Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, PFO Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, firefighters received a distress call and arrived at the scene at about 8:42 a.m.
The firefighters subsequently commenced a recovery operation and retrieved Ayeni’s body from the well.
The statement said the location of the incident was close to the deceased’s residence.
Following the recovery, the body was handed over to DPO Bolaji of Budo-Nuhu Police Station of the Nigeria Police Force for further necessary action.
The Chief Fire Officer, CFS Alabi Muhammed, expressed concern over the incident and urged residents to properly secure and cover domestic wells and other open water sources in residential areas.
He also advised parents, guardians and community leaders to ensure that children do not move around unattended near wells, drainage channels and other potentially hazardous areas.
The Kwara State Fire Service commiserated with the deceased’s family and the community, while reaffirming its commitment to responding promptly to emergencies and protecting lives and property across the state.
