The Guild of Digital Journalists (GDJ) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mr. Layi Olanrewaju, the Kwara State Correspondent of The Sun Newspapers, describing his death as a profound loss to the journalism profession and to the Guild in particular.
Mr. Olanrewaju, a former Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council, died in the early hours of Friday, February 13, 2026, after a brief illness.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Guild, the Chairman, Mr Opeyemi Adeoti noted that the late journalist was not only a seasoned professional but also a dependable senior colleague whose wise counsel and steady guidance contributed immensely to the growth and direction of the Guild.
“Mr. Olanrewaju was a friend of the Guild who stood out as a diligent and principled journalist. His commitment to truth, balance and professionalism earned him respect across newsrooms and institutions. Within the Guild, he was a voice of reason -calm, thoughtful- and always willing to guide younger colleagues,” the statement read.
The Guild recalled his years of service in the pen profession, during which he distinguished himself as a reporter who upheld ethical standards and strengthened the credibility of journalism in Kwara State and beyond. As Correspondent of The Sun, he provided responsible coverage of public affairs, earning recognition for fairness and depth.
