A police team in Kwara State Police Command’s Anti-Cultism Unit, on Tuesday, arrested a suspected cultist, Monday Ojoagbu, who was said to be notorious and a strong member of a cult group.
The suspect was arrested at Ace Supermarket, located at Unity area of Ilorin, at about 6pm.
Confirming Ojoagbu’s arrest on Wednesday night, the police spokesperson in the state, SP Okasanmi Ajayi, said that Ojoagbu and other members of his gang had been on the wanted list of the anti-cultism team, as they were said to be on a mission to carry out another gruesome attack on a target yet to be identified.
Recall before the suspect’s arrest, Ilorin, the state capital, had witnessed some cult killings and revengeful killings by opposing cult confraternities in recent times which had heightened tension among residents of the state.
The PPRO disclosed that other cultists escaped arrest, using customers of the supermarket as shields, as the police operatives avoided likely collateral damage in the process of the arrest.
Recovered from the suspect were a locally-made pistol and two live cartridges.
Okasanmi said that the suspect was still being investigated while efforts were being made to arrest his fleeing accomplices.
Commending police operatives on the arrest, the state Commissioner of Police, Tuesday Assayomo reiterated his warning to cultists and other lawbreakers that the state would not serve as their host.
CP Assayomo told them to desist from crime or relocate from the state, as no effort would be spared by the command in smoking criminal elements out of Kwara State.
